There are over 2,000 barrier islands worldwide, and Travel & Leisure featured two Gulf Coast spots in their recent story, “11 Best Barrier Islands in the U.S.”. Barrier islands are long, narrow strips of sand parallel to a mainland coast, separated by a body of water. These islands are ecologically vital as they protect the mainland from storms and give countless species a spot to call home.
Right in our backyard, we are lucky to have such beautiful ecosystems like the barrier islands that help protect us from storms and maintain a diverse ecosystem.

Dauphin Island is a classic Mobilian beach getaway. Only a 45-minute drive from Downtown Mobile, the 15-mile-long barrier island is abundant in walking and biking trails that also make for great birdwatching spots, which Travel & Leisure praised.
