On Thursday, May 21, we got to have an inside look at one of Mobile’s biggest projects: the Mobile International Airport Terminal. The project, which had an estimated cost of $362 million in December 2025, was originally scheduled to be complete in August 2025.
According to Luckett Robinson, Vice Chairman of Mobile Airport Authority, having the construction’s budget under control allowed for the construction of additional features, such as two traffic circles that will make getting to the terminal more efficient.
These infrastructure additions are what pushed the project’s completion to early 2027.
“We’re still working on the timelines for those road projects. The building itself and the parking deck will be substantially complete as we hoped in the September timeframe, but because we’re adding a little more infrastructure to make the convenience for the traveler that much better, it’s going to open a little bit in 2027.”
Luckett Robinson, Vice Chairman of Mobile Airport Authority
Here’s a quick rundown of the new terminal:
“The goal is not simply to complete a project, but to create something that lasts — something durable, functional, safe, and valuable for generations of residents, businesses, and visitors. This is our ripple in the pond, our blueprint, our legacy.”
Cheri Bouchard, American Public Works Association

Mobile’s Engineering & Public Works Roadshow

The tour of Mobile’s International Airport was part of the Engineering & Public Works Roadshow’s first stop on a 20+ location tour, which is part of “ongoing effort to inform the public and policymakers about what good infrastructure means to society, the economy, and the environment.”
Speeches were made by Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis, Mobile Airport Authority Vice Chairman Luckett Robinson, engineering and public works professionals, and U.S. Representative Barry Moore’s Director of Community Relations, Chad Niblett.
“I want, I hope and believe that Mobile International Airport will not just be Mobile’s airport; it’s going to be South Alabama’s airport, hopefully extending beyond the region.”
Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis

In his speech, Niblett touched on the progress of the Mobile Bayway project. This is a low-level bridge set to replace 7+ miles of existing bridge across the Mobile Bay, expanding I-10 from four to six lanes. It will extend about 7.4 miles from the high-level approach of the Mobile River Bridge to the US 90/98 Eastern Shore interchange in Daphne.
“The congressman [Barry Moore] is talking with the White House, every visit to the Oval Office — which now is becoming about a once a week thing — about the Mobile Bayway project, and it is becoming a big priority, and we are working closely with Congressman Shomari Figures and other members of the Alabama delegation to move that along.”
Chad Niblett, U.S. Representative Barry Moore’s Director of Community Relations
Niblett also spoke of other local projects that are set in stone but not actively moving forward at the moment:
- New infrastructure development plan to expand access on Pinto Island
- A stacker reclaimer, an industrial machine used in bulk material handling, was secured for the coal terminal
- $750,000 to go into Loxley’s water system for modern infrastructure improvements
- $1.5 million will go into cybersecurity improvements for Alabama Port Authority
Tour of the new Mobile International Airport Terminal
The new terminal’s interior will feature:
- Five gates
- A coffee shop
- Full service restaurant
- Gift shop
- A grab-and-go food bar
- A full service bar
The terminal will start out as a single-level building with a connected parking deck. The infrastructure is designed for future growth, so there will be room to expand with seven more gates in the future.
