The Mobile Mysticks were originally established in 1995 as a professional minor ice hockey team with the ECHL. Their name originated as a nod to Mobile’s historical mystic societies — the social organizations that host Carnival balls and parades during Mardi Gras.

The original Mysticks team lasted until 2002, when the franchise suspended operations following a season where they failed to make the playoffs.

Mobile Mysticks’ inaugural logo featured Mardi Gras colors (green, gold and purple), with a green dragon clutching hockey sticks doubling as an ‘M.’

The Mobile Mysticks are now owned by Zawyer Sports & Entertainment. Andy Kaufmann, CEO of Zawyer Sports & Entertainment, was the final speaker Tuesday evening before the logo unveiling.

“We always say you’re lucky if you find a city where if you love it, it loves you back… and that is the feeling we have, because we love you, and we feel that love here today.”

After the following video was projected in the Mobile Convention Center’s ballroom, an animated chant of “let’s go Mysticks” rang out in the moments between claps and cheers.

Following the announcement, Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis took to the stage — revealing his Mobile Mysticks tee that was previously hidden beneath his suit coat.

“I’m probably wearing nothing but Mysticks merch until October next year… except on Saturdays.”
