Gulf Shores roundabout now open, SR-161 Project nears completion
Reading time: 1 minute

Great news for those of you wanting to get your fall beach trips in: the North Roundabout on Alabama State Route 161, the final major piece in improvements to SR-161, has now been completed. This feature will allow for smoother traffic flow and increase travel options across the Gulf Coast.
The new circular intersection is located south of Gateway Boulevard (CR-8) in Gulf Shores and is open for traffic. Other improvements in the project include the new Waterway Bridge (officially the SR-161 South Bridge) and the SR-161 North Bridge located near The Wharf.
The brand new roundabout will:
- Give southbound SR-161 traffic access to Roscoe Road, plus additional access to County Road 4
- Allow northbound SR-161 motorists to more easily access southbound SR-161 toward SR-180 and Alabama’s beaches
- Provide another connection between SR-161 and the local road network
- Improve traffic flow and give motorists more travel options through the area
