The Alabama Retail Association named Amanda Calhoun and Stephanie Bell, co-owners of Fantasy Island Toys in downtown Fairhope, the Silver Alabama Retailers of the Year.

Fantasy Island Toys’ history in downtown Fairhope

Jeane Byrd founded Fantasy Island Toys in 1976. The store sells:

  • toys
  • games
  • books
  • crafts
  • educational products
  • play experiences for children + families

Sisters Calhoun and Bell bought the business in 2022 from Ginger Milligan, who previously ran it with her sister, Kathie Byrd. Since then, the owners have added a second location in Mobile and a growing nationwide e-commerce business.

Calhoun said she and Bell want to honor the store’s history as it grows.

“Fantasy Island Toys has been part of so many families’ lives over the past 50 years, and we feel fortunate to carry that legacy forward. As we grow, we want to preserve the personal connections that make shopping here special while finding new ways to reach families and serve our community.”

Community ties in Fairhope

The owners have invested in technology and convenient shopping options to support growth. They also host family-friendly events, partner with neighboring businesses and support local schools and nonprofits.

“We want Fantasy Island Toys to be a place where families connect, children explore their imaginations and our community comes together. Whether we’re helping a customer find the perfect gift or supporting a local school, we want every experience to reflect the joy of play.”

Alabama Retail Association recognition

Fantasy Island Toys has been a member of the Alabama Retail Association since 1994. The association represents retailers before the Alabama Legislature and the U.S. Congress.

“Alabama is fortunate to have one of the country’s premier independent toy stores. Fantasy Island Toys has served generations of families and is positioned to serve many more for years to come thanks to Stephanie and Amanda’s leadership.”

Rick Brown, president of the Alabama Retail Association

The award reflects Calhoun and Bell’s commitment to Byrd’s original mission of creating a magical place where children and families could discover the joy of play.
