Wawa’s grand opening in Loxley

The grand opening of Loxley’s Wawa kicked off with speeches by Alabama State Representative Donna Givens, Wawa board member Kevin McGrath, General Manager of Wawa #5810 Andy Stephens and Alabama Special Olympics representative Angie.
McGrath stated during his speech that Wawa focuses their support on health, hunger, and everyday heroes. Representatives from one of Wawa’s supported foundations, the Special Olympics, was present at the opening.
“On behalf of the games in Minnesota, we have 50 athletes in the state of Alabama to represent our organization, and Wawa has partnered with Smartwater and donated water to the games in Minnesota. We always need to hydrate our athletes, so we appreciate it.”

In addition to Special Olympics, Wawa supports:
- American Red Cross
- Children’s Miracle Network
- USO
- Breakthrough T1D
- Blood Cancer United
- Feeding America
Everyday heroes were also celebrated at the grand opening in the form of Loxley’s Volunteer Fire Department and Police Department. As with all their grand openings, Wawa had the departments compete in “Hoagies for Heroes,” a timed hoagie-building competition.
With just two minutes on the clock, the fire department team and police department team had to build as many hoagies as possible. Although a trophy (and bragging rights) were on the line, Wawa donated $1,000 to both departments’ charity of choice, regardless of the winner.
After a neck-and-neck competition, featuring a food fight, the Loxley Fire Department were the ones to take the trophy back to their station.

Following “Hoagies for Heroes,” a ribbon-cutting took place with Loxley Mayor Richard Teal, Wawa staff, and community members sharing in the excitement.
