2.5% pension raise for Mobile’s retired firefighters, police officers to take effect Oct. 1
Reading time: 2 minutes

For the first time in nearly two decades, the cost-of-living for retired police officers and firefighters will be adjusted in Mobile. The 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) was approved during last week’s Mobile City Council meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Set to take effect Oct. 1, this increase to the cityβs Police and Firefighters Pension Fund will be the first permanent raise since 2008, following a one-time bonus given to other city retirees last month. Approximately 760 pensioners across the city are eligible for this increase, according to a city news release.
βWhile this marks progress, it represents a modest step forward, especially considering the prolonged period during which the original pensions of the pensioners have diminished in value. Therefore, this should be recognized as a positive initial step forward, and we thank you again.β
Randy Reed, president of the Mobile Fire Retirees Association, during the Aug. 11 Mobile City Council Meeting
This raise was made possible through the management of taxpayer resources, allowing the City of Mobile to pay down unfunded liability in the pension over decades.
In March 2027, the city will make its final payment toward the unfunded liability. Making the pension fund whole not only makes the COLA possible β it will also free up resources for the city to use in the near future.
βItβs important that we have the backs of the heroes who protected us for years. This cost-of-living adjustment comes when these men and women need it the most, and itβs long overdue. Iβm always proud to support those who answered the call to serve and protect this city, and Iβm happy we were able to get this done.β
Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis
