10 Mobile area weekend events: Downtown roller-skating, Jimmy Buffett exhibit + more (Sept. 11-13)

This weekend has a range of fun events for the whole family to enjoy, from a rollerskating pop-up event in downtown Mobile and a community picnic in Washington Square Park to the new Jimmy Buffett exhibit’s grand opening celebration at the National Maritime Museum.

Things to do Friday, Sept. 11

Roll Mobile Pop-Up @ Bienville Square

Bring the whole crew to this free family-friendly roller skating event on Friday! People of all ages and experience levels are welcome, and the rink will be ADA-accessible for adaptive skaters to enjoy.

DJ Geaux will be bringing the music while skaters glide around the rink.

Rules:

  • Children 10 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
  • You must have skates to enter.
  • You must skate with the flow of skaters.
  • No standing still in flow of skaters.
  • No sudden stops in flow of skaters.
  • Novice/beginner skaters must stay in the inside lane.
  • No bicycles, hoverboards, scooters or skateboards.
  • No pets.

Pro-tip: Skates will NOT be available for rent, so participants must bring their own roller skates or roller blades. 

  • When: Friday, Sept. 11, 6-9PM

LODA ArtWalk: National Piano Month in Downtown Mobile

This September’s ArtWalk will feature live piano performances in Cathedral Square in addition to the regular line-up of local artisans, food trucks and interactive experiences. Jackson Cooper Sanderson will have two 45-minute piano performances at 6:30PM and 7:30PM.

Pro-tip: Stop by the the Kids’ Zone on North Claiborne Street to enjoy hands-on crafts, face-painting and other activities.

Annual Oktoberfest @ Braided River Brewing

During LoDa’s Artwalk, join Braided River Brewing for their annual Oktoberfest celebration featuring live music, traditional food, German beer and limited-edition Oktoberfest boot glasses!

At 7PM, they’ll have a boot hoisting competition (with men’s and women’s categories). Winners will receive tickets to Braided River Brewing’s anniversary party as well as hand-blown pint glasses from Muffinjaw Designs.

Speakeasy Murder Mystery @ Twist 181 Lounge

Twist 181 Lounge in Spanish Fort’s Eastern Shore Centre will be hosting a speakeasy-themed murder-mystery dinner on Saturday night, where guests can interrogate suspects, analyze evidence and work together to unmask the killer before the night is over. Guests are encouraged to dress in their best 1920s attire for the occasion, but costumes are not required.

Bonus: This event is a fundraiser; a portion of all proceeds will go to reduce lunch debt for Baldwin County students!

Things to do Saturday, Sept. 12

9/11 Memorial Stair Climb @ Spanish Fort High School Football Stadium

Participants will climb 110 flights of stairs, symbolic of the height of the World Trade Center, in a free, untimed event in remembrance of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The community event is open to all ages and fitness levels, and advanced levels can gear up (for 1st responders) or wear a weight vest to challenge themselves.

Pro-tip: A shorter, modified route is available for those who want to participate but aren’t able to complete the full climb.

3rd Annual Pumpkin Patch @ Muffinjaw Designs

Muffinjaw Designs in Mobile will be showcasing their entire collection of handmade glass pumpkins plus other seasonal items. Visitors can watch live glassblowing demonstrations for free, take part in giveaways and browse quality goodies from other local vendors.

Jimmy Buffet Exhibit’s grand opening @ Mobile’s National Maritime Museum

This Saturday, the new 6,000-square-foot Jimmy Buffett exhibit at the National Maritime Museum will open to the public with a big celebration. The day will feature a ribbon-cutting, a mural festival, food trucks, live music, photo opportunities and family-friendly activities!

Pro-tip: Visitors can park at the Maritime Museum’s parking lot at 155 Water Street. In case of overflow, guests can park for free at the Alabama Cruise Terminal parking lot at 201 Water Street or pay to park at the Mobile Convention Center parking garage at 1 S. Water Street.

Mobtown Picnic Pop-Up @ Washington Square Park

Grab a blanket or chair and have a picnic in one of Mobile’s historic parks, Washington Square, this weekend. Sit back and enjoy live music by Matthew Wojo, try treats from food trucks and shop local vendors.

Pro-tips: Large tents/canopies may be restricted to ensure visibility and adequate space for all attendees. Pets must be leashed, and owners are responsible for cleaning up after them.

Y2K Throwback Night @ Twist 181 Lounge

From 8PM to midnight, Twist 181 Lounge will be taking it back to the 2000s — low rise jeans, flip phones and all. Expect DJ Scratchy McSpinworth to play guests’ favorite throwback hits, Y2K-inspired cocktails and a themed photo backdrop. Dressing for the era is optional but encouraged!

Things to do Sunday, Sept. 13

French Flower Cart Paint and Sip @ the Frenchmen

Make your Sunday afternoon a relaxing one with a fun, guided paint and sip class at The Frenchmen in downtown Mobile. Guests can create their own colorful flower cart masterpiece while enjoying their favorite drinks.

Pro-tip: This event is BYOB, so you’ll want to grab your drink of choice before the class.
