Prism United, a local nonprofit supporting LGBTQ+ youth, has secured $37,500 in grant funding to expand its program connecting young people to affirming therapy and care.

The grant comes from the Johnson Family Foundation and CenterLink’s Mental Health Capacity-Building Initiative. The Johnson Family Foundation supports the development of “healthy, vibrant and just communities,” according to the nonprofit’s website. CenterLink is the world’s largest LGBTQ+ community-based association.

“Access to affirming mental health care can be life-changing. For many young people, it can be the difference between feeling alone and finally feeling seen. This investment allows us to meet them with care, consistency and support when they need it most.”

Corey Harvard, director of Prism United

Prism was founded in 2018 and provides services that foster belonging and resilience for LGBTQ+ youth. Some of their services include:

  • Peer support programs
  • Mental health resources
  • Leadership development
  • Community events

The grant will be used to expand Prism’s Healing Fund, which:

  • Provides financial assistance for therapy with vetted, affirming providers
  • Reduces cost barriers that often prevent young people from accessing care
  • Currently serves individuals ages 14-18, but grant support means Prism can now support ages 14-24

Since it launched, the fund has provided around 100 hours of free therapy to local youth, according to Prism.

Thanks to the grant, Prism will also be able to:

  • Expand its provider network
  • Improve referral systems
  • Build partnerships with wellness providers, like fitness studios + creative spaces

Prism United will launch a grassroots fundraising campaign in June as part of its “Alive With Pride” initiative with the goal of raising $10,000. As Pride Month approaches, learn more about Prism and their upcoming programming on their website or social media profiles.
