HGTV has selected the best public parks and green spaces in every state and one of Mobile’s most popular spots was selected for Alabama.
The historic Bienville Square got the honor for our state as HGTV noted the park’s connection to Mardi Gras while also crediting the recent renovation following Hurricane Sally in 2020.
“Today, Mobile’s Bienville Square is the site of the state’s Mardi Gras festivities. This historic park takes up an entire city block and also hosts events like weddings, live concerts and Kids Days. Damaged by Hurricane Sally in 2020, the Square reopened in spring 2024, just in time to mark its bicentennial. Its large trees, iconic cast iron fountain, lawns, benches and paved paths make it a favorite.”

Bienville Square
The park is just one city block in the heart of downtown Mobile. It’s officially located at 150 Dauphin Street.
The origins of the park date back to 1824 when the federal government reserved the plot of land to be a city park and it was eventually named after Mobile’s founder Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville.
“The square takes up the entire block bordered by the streets of Dauphin, Saint Joseph, Saint Francis and North Conception, and is notable for its large cast iron fountain with an acanthus leaf motif. The park’s storied past includes hosting a speech by President Theodore Roosevelt.”
