The Laguna Cove Nature Park, a conservation and recreation project at the west end of Gulf Shores, is steadily taking shape, and locals will soon have a new spot to kayak, bird-watch and soak up the natural beauty this stretch of coastline is known for.

What is Laguna Cove Nature Park?

Laguna Cove is a 53-acre conservation and recreation park being developed at the end of West Beach Boulevard along Little Lagoon.

The City of Gulf Shores purchased the land in 2019 to protect it from future development, and the site is now being transformed into a public space centered on habitat restoration and low-impact outdoor recreation.

Laguna Cove Nature Park construction update

Crews are making progress on curbing and concrete work at the site, according to an update from the city on Thursday, Aug. 6.

The eastern boardwalk is nearly finished, and additional boardwalk construction is set to continue in the coming weeks as the park inches closer to opening.

What amenities are coming to Laguna Cove Park?

Once complete, the park will offer:

  • Restoration of wetlands + critical wildlife habitats
  • Public restrooms
  • Low-impact parking
  • Kayaking, birding + interpretive boardwalks

The City of Gulf Shores’ acquisition of the land protects it from future development, preserving it as a sanctuary for wildlife and a place for residents and visitors to get outside.

How Laguna Cove Nature Park is funded

Laguna Cove is fully funded through a Natural Resource Damage Assessment grant from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources — the same funding source that made the original 2019 land purchase possible.

Asphalt Services is handling construction on a $2.6 million bid, with design services provided by Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood.

When will Laguna Cove Nature Park open?

According to the city’s official project timeline, Laguna Cove Nature Park is expected to open in fall 2026.

Construction began in June, following years of planning and design that started back in 2021, building on the land purchase the city made in 2019.
