Two local airports in Baldwin and Mobile counties are getting a financial boost for infrastructure improvements.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced a massive $1.7 billion investment from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to modernize airports across 46 states on Thursday, July 2. The federal funding package targets runway rehabilitations, safety upgrades and long-term infrastructure needs ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.
Federal infrastructure funding brings over $250,000 to Baldwin and Mobile county aviation hubs
As part of the nationwide rollout, 14 Alabama airports secured funding from the fourth round of fiscal year 2026 grants. Two key projects are headed to the Mobile Bay area:
- Bay Minette Municipal Airport was awarded $150,000 through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) to construct a new taxilane.
- St. Elmo Airport was awarded $103,001 through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) to rehabilitate an access road.
According to FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford, the funding aims to modernize the travel experience quickly and efficiently, ensuring local and national aviation systems remain safe and prepared for future traffic demands.
