Daphne native Pat White gets jersey retired at West Virginia

Pat White was honored before West Virginia’s 2026 season opener as the school officially announced the retirement of his No. 5 jersey.
White, who was a star at Daphne High School, led the Mountaineers to 35 wins in four seasons and left as one of the most successful quarterbacks in the program’s history. He now serves as the assistant quarterbacks coach for West Virginia.

Pat White becomes 7th jersey retirement in WVU history
Pat White set 19 school, Big East and national records during his college career, including finishing as the all-time rushing quarterback in NCAA history with 4,480 yards, a number that now ranks second all time.
West Virginia was 35-8 with White as the starting quarterback. He led the Mountaineers to bowl wins in the 2006 Sugar, 2007 Gator, 2008 Fiesta and 2008 Meineke Car Care, becoming the first quarterback to ever win four bowl games.
White set the Big East records for:
- Touchdowns responsible for (103)
- Total offensive yards (10,529)
- First player in Big East history to pass and rush for more than 10,000 yards
WVU fans wore all white at the win over Coastal Carolina to celebrate the jersey retirement. White also became the eighth name added to West Virginia’s stadium wall.
According to West Virginia, White said the official retirement can come at the end of the season after senior wide receiver Jaden Bray’s career.
After that, no other West Virginia football player will wear No. 5.
White was already a star in Daphne
As a senior at Daphne High School, Pat White was a first-team all-state quarterback. He rushed for more than 1900 yards and 31 touchdowns to go with 15 more touchdowns through the air.
He led the Trojans to a perfect regular season before losing to Hoover in the Class 6A state championship game. White finished third in the state’s Mr. Football voting.
