Cooper Riverside Park in Mobile to open July 4th for fireworks viewing

Locals have a chance to get an early look at Cooper Riverside Park’s improvements this weekend.
In his latest newsletter, Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis announced that the downtown waterfront park will host a special soft opening Saturday, July 4. The park will serve as an official overflow viewing area for the holiday fireworks spectacular launched across the river at the USS Battleship Memorial Park.
Following the Independence Day festivities, the park will temporarily close to allow crews to put the final touches on the major renovation project before it opens permanently later this summer.
Cooper Riverside Park renovations and 4th of July event details
The extensive redevelopment aims to drastically improve both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the downtown riverfront footprint. Key upgrades to the park include:
- The great lawn: A massive, newly expanded green space designed to host picnics, community concerts + large-scale outdoor events.
- Enhanced accessibility: Upgraded, ADA-compliant pathways + modern, accessible restroom facilities.
- Shoreline reinforcement: A complete rebuilding + stabilization of the water’s edge bulkhead.
The project team is also managing the return of a familiar landmark. The statue of the park’s namesake, Ervin S. Cooper, is scheduled for reinstallation at the end of July.
Mobile Programs + Project Management team drives waterfront updates
Mayor Cheriogotis thanked Jennifer Greene, the Director of Programs and Project Management for the City of Mobile, and her team for driving the waterfront revitalization to near completion.
Greene’s department is tasked with directing execution for a portfolio of more than $150 million in municipal capital improvements, the mayor’s newsletter said, ranging from environmental restoration to major civil infrastructure.
The park will temporarily shutter again Sunday, July 5, to allow crews to finish the remaining restroom details and site work, city officials indicate the wait for the permanent unveiling will be brief. A formal grand reopening is slated for later this summer.
