Bankhead Tunnel closed in Mobile for emergency repairs until further notice

Attention, Downtown Mobile commuters: The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) Southwest Region announced that the Bankhead Tunnel is closed, effective immediately, for emergency utility repairs.

ALDOT has not given a timeline for when the tunnel will reopen, stating that the closure will remain in place for an “undetermined amount of time” while crews begin work on the repairs.

Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes — such as the Wallace Tunnel (I-10) or the Africatown Bridge — and check the ALGO Traffic app for real-time traffic updates.
