Summer’s here, and many local kids are springing out of bed early without being asked—so excited about the days to come during Expedition Delta Summer Day Camps at the Alabama Wildlife Federation Delta & Bay Conservation Center, formerly known as Five Rivers.

This could be your child, too, but better act fast! Spots are filling up for five different themed camps at the AWF DBCC from now through early August—register them now.

When the camps kicked off on June 1, we paid a visit to hear firsthand from kids and parents about what they love about it and why all curious adventure seekers in the Mobile Bay area need to be there this summer.

Nicole Owler saw our social video about the camps in May and immediately signed up her kids, Rose and Grayson, who regaled her all week with “a lot of fish stories” and passed along tips about what they’ve learned.

Fellow mom Laequell Kiel of Mobile said the camp appealed to her 11-year-old son, Braxton, because he could connect with other kids who love fishing like he does, while allowing him to gain knowledge and pointers from experienced guides.

Braxton loved it so much that he bounded out of bed every morning without being asked, excited to start the day at camp. He was just as excited to share stories at pick-up time.

“The fish have been my favorite part so far. They look so good! I’ve caught two or three so far and have been trying to go for a large amount of bass. And the people here are really nice!”

Below are the remaining camp sessions this summer, built around five themes that inspired AWF DBCC Director of Camps & Public Programs Brayden Paulk during his childhood in Alabama’s great outdoors.

All camp sessions are co-ed and run Monday–Friday, 8AM–3:30PM during the dates specified below.

Expedition Summer Day Camps for ages 10–16

🔎 Budding Naturalist Camp

  • When: June 22–26
  • What: For the detail-oriented kid who’ll love micro-fishing for minnows, live trapping, bug hunts + plant walks.
  • Cost: $220 | Register

🎣 Fish On! Camp (2nd session)

  • When: Aug. 3–7
  • What: Kids learn fundamentals while targeting big fish like catfish, gar + smallmouth buffalo before finishing the week with a tournament with prizes.
  • Cost: $235 | Register

Expedition Summer Day Camps for ages 6–12

🌿 Delta Camp

  • When: Three remaining sessions through July 31
  • What: This is a sampler of fishing, birding, hiking, archery and survival skills for younger kids who want to try everything before committing.
  • Cost: $220 | Register

📜 Expedition Delta: 1807 Camp

  • When: July 6–10
  • What: An immersive role-play where kids become frontier explorers on a fictional expedition commissioned by Thomas Jefferson into the Mobile-Tensaw Delta.
  • Cost: $240 | Register

🦎 Slime + Scales Camp

  • When: July 20–24
  • What: Covers frogs, turtles, lizards and snakes, including how to tell the difference between a harmless ribbon snake versus ones to avoid.
  • Cost: $220 | Register
