SUMMARY:Aminah Robinson: Journeys Home\, a Visual Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson (1940 – 2015) was an exceptionally prolific artist who used traditional and unconventional\, non-traditional materials to create a staggering body of work. Her drawings\, paintings\, sculptures\, and mixed-media textiles chronicle her family’s African ancestry\, her worldwide travels\, and her witness to African American life. A MacArthur Fellow\, Robinson was also a researcher\, historian\, and poet who used her vast talents to draw harmony into a discordant world. When Robinson passed away\, she entrusted her art\, writing\, personal belongings\, and home studio to the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio\, her hometown museum.  \n\n\n\n Aminah Robinson: Journeys Home\, a Visual Memoir brings together some of the artist’s most profound works and words\, produced over seven decades from 1948 to 2012. Drawing upon Robinson’s historical research\, folklore\, and personal narrative\, the exhibition presents a visual memoir of the artist’s life and a compelling tableau of the African American experience.

SUMMARY:Handle with Care
DESCRIPTION:Handle with Care is a new interactive exhibition exploring all the potential of what we take for granted. In a partnership exhibition originated by Alabama Contemporary Art Center for Mobile Museum of Art\, artists Calder Kamin (Austin\, TX) and Jacob Reptile (New Orleans\, LA) transform trash into soft and complex sculptures to create a new kind of environment. Through purposeful reuse of fabrics\, plastics and second-hand materials\, these artists create new alien lifeforms\, flora and fauna to populate an imagined landscape. The space they have created speaks to local ecology\, the environmental impact of waste and inspires a playful consideration of what we produce through industry. Everything here was once discarded\, now re-purposed into a mythical topography that celebrates vibrant and unfettered growth\, and invites viewers to inhabit the exhibition as they consider how we inhabit the natural world we live in.Everything has been touched by human hands and can be touched. Everything can find purpose with a little imagination\, and the work of making a sustainable planet can also happen through play.

SUMMARY:Timeless Hats by Susie Mae Pugh-Williams: A Legacy of Creativity\, Elegance\, Reverence & Resilience
DESCRIPTION:January 29 – August 15\, 2026 Curated by Dr. Irma McClaurin\, PhD and Bobby C. Williams\, Jr.  \n\n\n\nHats or ‘crowns’ as they are known in African American communities are an essential part of African American culture. They have played a key role in African American life from enslavement to modern day as symbols of reverence in houses of worship or resilience and resistance in times of enslavement and freedom. Susie Mae-Pugh Williams (1949 – 2020) was born and raised in Mobile\, AL. She taught herself the art of millinery (hat making) and created hats\, wraps\, fascinators and other head wear for herself\, friends and clients. Those creations would have been worn to church or for events such as weddings\, Mardi Gras festivities and other celebrations.  This exhibition contains over two dozen hats that were made by Mrs. Williams or that she admired and drew inspiration from for her own creations.

SUMMARY:America 250 – Kent Portfolio
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the Bicentennial of the United States\, Lorillard\, a division of Loews Theaters\, Inc.\, produced the Kent Bicentennial Portfolio: Spirit of Independence in 1974. The company asked artists across the country the question\, “What does independence mean to you?” Over a hundred artists answered Lorillard’s inquiry and after countless interviews\, the company selected twelve artists for inclusion in the portfolio.Unusual for a commissioned art project\, the artists were given no restrictions on their creativity – be it size\, color or subject matter. The only requirement was to interpret the question\, “What does independence mean to you?”The interpretations of independence varied from artist to artist – some artists depicted the theme purely as a celebration of our country’s bicentennial\, some took a historic approach\, while others dove deeper. For instance\, Colleen Browning reflected on what it meant to be an immigrant in the United States\, while Jacob Lawrence reimagined the experience of African American parents having the freedom to vote in 1920s New Jersey during the Jim Crow era\, and Fritz Scholder pointed to the irony of a people who were treated as obstacles to expansion celebrating the bicentennial. The artists’ works were reproduced in 125 portfolios and gifted to museums across the country. Mobile Museum of Art was one of the fortunate recipients. In addition\, the American Federation of the Arts (AFA) and the United States Information Agency (USIA) further commemorated the Bicentennial and traveled the portfolio to museums and other institutions across the country and internationally to Europe\, Africa and Asia.
