SUMMARY:Moon Taxi
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 700 and show time at 800. \n\n\n\nTickets are $30 in advance and $35 day of show (if available).  Seated Side Riser tickets are $75 (ltd qty).  \n\n\n\nGet adv tickets starting Thursday May 25th at 10am at www.soulkitchenmobile.com or by calling 866.777.8932. \n\n\n\nUnder 18 with a parent only.  Anyone under 21 pays $5 surcharge at the door. \n\n\n\nAll support acts are subject to change without notice. \n\n\n\nOnce again ready to push the boundaries of their genre\, Nashville based indie alt-rock band Moon Taxi is back with their sixth full length album\, Set Yourself Free. With tracks ranging from rock to synth to pop to bluegrass\, the new lineup showcases what 15 years as a band gets you: a polished\, classic sound without fear of exploration. The five-member group- vocalist/guitarist Trevor Terndrup\, lead guitarist Spencer Thomson\, bassist Tommy Putnam\, keyboardist Wes Bailey\, and drummer Tyler Ritter- stepped back into their roots to create an album primarily written and recorded by themselves and set for release on their own label\, 12th South Records. \n\n\n\n“It was really rewarding for each of us. The last record had quite a few co-writes- this record did not. We challenged ourselves to write most of the material on our own and that’s really something to hang your hat on these days when you typically hire an outside writer or producer\,” said Bailey on the band’s creative process. “We really tried to look inward and do a lot of that on our own.” Remote collaboration on Set Yourself Free started for the group during the pandemic\, but 15 years of working together made that transition a smooth one. \n\n\n\n“During the pandemic\, we got used to FaceTime songwriting. For better or worse\, it’s been a great way for everyone to collaborate remotely.  The lyics for the title track\, Set Yourself Free\, were even written on a 5 way call. And the song shows that collaborative color throughout. The idea of falling back on someone you trust is so important nowadays. But truly it’s how we’ve tried to operate as a band for all these years.” said Terndrup. \n\n\n\n“You know\, we’ve been a band for a while and we know each other really well. We spend a whole lot of time together\, so it’s not that foreign to be able to get on a call and get your point across to anybody else in the band. We know each other well enough to be able to accomplish that\,” added Putnam. \n\n\n\nThe album was finished through work in a few Nashville studios with the help of producer and collaborator\, Brennan Aerts. \n\n\n\nDespite a more fragmented process\, the band regards Set Yourself Free as more reminiscent of their early work\, citing it as fresh and exciting. Ritter believes they have a fan favorite on their hands- something that will re-energize the old fan-base as well as draw in new listeners. Without a set sound in mind\, the group was free to mold the record into what feels like an authentic Moon Taxi album. \n\n\n\n“We didn’t exactly sit down and have an agenda for what the album was going to sound like. We just worked on songs for a long period of time and then the last couple of months have been more of a discovery process – discovering what we’ve actually been doing and trying to make sense of the whole thing\,” says Thomson. “So instead of going for some goal that we set out for\, it was more just exploring things and seeing how they all work together. We just leave all our opinions in and that makes it more like a Moon Taxi record- it’s all our inside input rather than outside input.” \n\n\n\nThe 13-song record covers a number of genres in a sequence that remains interesting listen after listen. The opening song\, “Walk Out\,” is a fully instrumental piece that features each member of the group. “It starts out with a really simple melody and just morphs into this thing we can all play on top of\,” Bailey observes. “I think it’s what our fans want to hear – that aspect\, the performance of it. You can hear our hands and fingers in a lot of these tracks that maybe got lost on some of the previous efforts. For me\, that’s really exciting. \n\n\n\nAnother band favorite is “Classics\,” which was released as the first single from the record. The chorus line\, “raise your glasses to the classics\,” resonated quickly with the group as they recalled its debut at Hangout Fest when they used that line as a pre-performance toast. Driving and catchy\, this song is an instant reminder of the songs we all live our lives to. \n\n\n\nAn ode to Thomson’s hometown of Bowling Green\, Kentucky\, “Evergreen” brings a bluegrass vibe to the album and features Grammy winning artist Molly Tuttle. Thomson had been hoping to write “a little nugget” about his beloved town\, but after Bowling Green was hit by a tornado in 2021\, the right words finally came to him. With endearing harmonies and a folky melody\, “Evergreen” will surely inspire many listeners to book tickets to visit home. \n\n\n\nWith five previous albums under their belt\, Moon Taxi had\, and took\, the opportunity to think outside the box and make some reaches\, both musically and lyrically. “I think a lot of that freedom comes with having done it for a long time and on album number six\, you’re no longer trying to find your sound like you are in earlier albums. You can kind of do what you want and then objectively look at it towards the end\,” said Putnam. “You just trust yourself and your ear.”Set Yourself Free showcases the skill of a fully developed and practiced group of musicians. Free from the barriers of genre and self-definition\, Moon Taxi presents a fresh and bold take on their sound.

SUMMARY:Coast Guard Exhibit Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:Mobile\, Ala.– Nearly forty works by 28 artists of the U.S. Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP) are on view at GulfQuest National Maritime Museum from now through December. An official grand opening event is set for September 16th at 11AM at GulfQuest. The event will feature a speaker from the Coast Guard\, Coast Guard Recruiters\, and a live search and rescue demonstration on the waterfront at noon. The media and the public are invited to attend. This art vividly brings to life the myriad missions the U.S. Coast Guard performs. Subjects portrayed\, to name but a few\, include daring search and rescue missions\, dramatic surf boat exercises\, protection of the environment and living marine resources\, and paintings of significant moments in Coast Guard history. COGAP\, which marks its 42nd anniversary this year\, utilizes fine art as an outreach tool for educating diverse audiences about the United States Coast Guard. Today\, more than ever\, the service addresses an abundance of challenges as it works to maintain the nation’s security at home and abroad and execute its 11 statutory missions such as drug interdiction\, marine safety\, and marine environmental protection. COGAP art provides visual testimony to the unique contribution the Coast Guard makes to the nation in its multifaceted role as a military\, humanitarian\, and law enforcement organization. COGAP members-many of whom are professional artists-donate their works to the collection\, which numbers some 2\,200 works\, most depicting the missions performed by the Coast Guard’s 41\,000 active-duty members. Since the program’s inception\, it has been sponsored by the Salmagundi Club\, a noted New York City cultural and art center. GulfQuest National Maritime Museum is located at 155 South Water Street in Mobile. Exhibition hours are 10 AM to 4 PM Wednesday-Saturday and admission is $10 for adults. The museum aims to heighten understanding and appreciation of the region’s maritime industries and history along the Gulf of Mexico. \n\n\n\nAdd to Calendar

SUMMARY:HEROES & VILLAINS
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 16\, 2023 at 7:30 p.m.Sunday\, September 17\, 2023\, 2:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nScott Speck\, conductor. \n\n\n\nWithout amazing music from composers like John Williams\, Ennis Morricone\, John Barry\, Maurice Barre and Max Steiner\, the movies’ greatest heroes and villains would never find Star Wars\, Bride of Frankenstein\, Lawrence of Arabia\, Rocky\, Dances with Wolves\, Wonder Woman\, The Good\, the Bad and the Ugly\, The Incredibles\, and much more! \n\n\n\nSpeck SpeaksMusic Director Scott Speck Discusses the Concert: \n\n\n\n“Creating this concert for you has been a labor of love. From the vast\, almost unfathomable universe of great film scores\, we’ve chosen several of the greatest\, all within the category of HEROES AND VILLAINS. \n\n\n\nWe first toyed with a program called HOLLYWOOD HEROES. Of course\, there’s no shortage of those: From Rocky to Wonder Woman\, from Harry Potter to Braveheart\, from Superman to Rey from Star Wars. But then we wouldn’t have the fun of playing the themes of those delicious villains. Like Darth Vader\, the Godfather himself\, or all those Pirates of the Caribbean — not to mention the amoral antiheroes in The Good\, the Bad and the Ugly. And what about Lawrence of Arabia\, The Magnificent Seven\, and Bride of Frankenstein? Were they heroes or villains? We perform\, you decide. \n\n\n\nThe point of this program\, and the point of our film concerts in general\, is that we take this music seriously. For years we have revered the composers of opera and ballet\, without realizing that movies (and now video games) have become an equally valid entertainment for the current and recent generations. There is nothing inherently less profound or praiseworthy about the quest to create the musical landscape for a film rather than a ballet. Film music propels and enhances the movie’s story\, often with the same kinds of complex operatic leitmotif that might be found in a Wagner opera. Thank goodness that John Williams\, now in his 92nd year\, has finally been recognized for the musical genius that he is — truly one of the great composers of the 20th and 21st centuries\, full stop. \n\n\n\nAs you’ve heard me say before\, I almost became a film composer myself. I was pretty good at imitating the style of John Williams\, but I never did discover my own compositional style. Just as importantly\, I couldn’t compose with lightning speed — something that is absolutely necessary in the film world. (And lest anyone think that this emphasis on speed makes film music inherently less serious or complex\, I remind you that Gioachino Rossini wrote The Barber of Seville in 21 days\, and Mozart wrote out the scores to his final three symphonies in just six weeks.) In the end\, I’ve been thrilled to help bring other people’s masterpieces to life. \n\n\n\nIn this concert\, we present a sampling of the world’s great music for films — including such masters as Max Steiner\, Maurice Jarre\, Elmer Bernstein\, James Horner\, John Barry\, Ennio Morricone\, Nico Rota\, Bill Conti\, and of course John Williams. We hope you enjoy this program as much as we’ve enjoyed curating it for you.” – Scott Speck

SUMMARY:USA’s Department of Theatre & Dance: Steel Magnolias
DESCRIPTION:“I would rather have 30 minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.” \n\n\n\nThe University of South Alabama Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present their 2023 fall production of Steel Magnolias written by Robert Harling and Directed by Haley Green. \n\n\n\n“Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” Written as a tribute to his sister Susan by playwright Robert Harling\, Steel Magnolias explores the relationships between a tight-knit group of Louisiana southern ladies who gather in Truvy’s small-town beauty parlor\, celebrating the milestones in each other’s lives. Filled with hilarious repartee and humorously acerbic verbal lacerations\, the play deepens when the spunky Shelby (who is diabetic) contradicts her doctor’s advice and risks pregnancy. Steel Magnolias exemplifies the universal and unconditional strengths of sisterhood\, resilience\, and love. \n\n\n\nTickets are on Sale Now!!
