SUMMARY:Gipsy Kings Featuring Nicolas Reyes
DESCRIPTION:Nicolas Reyes has been the leader and co-founder of the Gipsy Kings for well over 30 years. In the past three decades\, they have dominated the World Music charts and sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. Their platinum compilation\, The Best of the Gipsy Kings\, was charting for over a year upon its release and their ninth studio album\, Savor Flamenco\, was awarded the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2013.   \n\n\n\nThis iconic legacy began when Nicolas’ father\, Jose Reyes\, formed a celebrated flamenco duo with Manitas de Plata (which boasted fans as famed as Miles Davis and Pablo Picasso). When the pair parted ways\, the elder Reyes became even more popular upon starting his own band\, backed by his son\, called Los Reyes. In later years\, Nicolas headed out on his own and began playing in the town of Arles in the south of France. He traveled throughout the country\, busking on the streets of Saint-Tropez\, playing wherever he could. Having adopted the perpetual motion of the gypsy lifestyle\, his band eventually translated “Los Reyes” and became the Gipsy Kings.  \n\n\n\nThe band’s music went on to fuse with popular culture. In addition to the accolades above\, the traveling Gipsy Kings have played some of the world’s greatest stages\, from the Hollywood Bowl to Royal Albert Hall as well as hitting the big screen. Their rendition of “Hotel California” was included in the film The Big Lebowski and the HBO series Entourage. The 2010 film Toy Story 3 featured a Gipsy Kings version of the movie’s popular\, Randy Newman-penned theme\, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. The Gipsy Kings recently featured in a Big Lebowski spinoff The Jesus Rolls with Reyes appearing in person with the director and star\, John Turturro\, for some of the promotion.   \n\n\n\nAs active as this remarkable collective remains\, they are also confident in the future of their legacy. “Even though it’s been 30 years\, we want to keep on making new music because it’s our life. The concert highlighted the band’s ongoing relationship with the GRAMMY Museum’s initiative to promote music education in our nation’s schools. It included an a cappella contest among New York high schools who competed for a $5\,000 prize donated by the band. The year also brought the release of FOREIGNER‘s first ever live acoustic album In Concert: Unplugged\, recorded at a once-in-a-lifetime private concert hosted by Edsel B. Ford II at the Ford Motor Company Conference & Event Center in Detroit\, MI. The band’s royalties were donated to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and the album is available exclusively via Amazon. \n\n\n\nThe year 2017 marked the celebration of FOREIGNER‘s 40th anniversary. The Warner Music Group released a double CD set “40\,” which includes 40 songs recorded between 1977 and 2017. The album spent several weeks on the Billboard Top 200 chart and it features two tracks recorded especially for this release\, “Give My Life For Love” and a new version of “I Don’t Want To Live Without You.” The album spent nine weeks in the Billboard Top 200 chart. The US anniversary headline tour played 40 shows across the United States where the band was supported by Cheap Trick and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience. \n\n\n\nIn April 2018\, FOREIGNER topped the Billboard Classic Album Charts for the first time with FOREIGNER WITH THE 21ST CENTURY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & CHORUS\, a live recording of FOREIGNER’s first-ever orchestral shows in Lucerne\, Switzerland. The band went on to headline orchestral shows in the US\, Europe\, Australia and New Zealand throughout the year includingsold-out appearances at London’s Royal Albert Hall and the iconic Sydney Opera House. In the summer of 2018\, FOREIGNER starred in a thirty city Live Nation US summer tour with Whitesnake and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening in support. The excitement continued in 2019 with the premiere of Juke Box Hero\, the Musical in Canada. Following a series of sold-out workshops in Alberta and Calgary\, the musical premiered in Toronto in February and a Broadway run is on the horizon. \n\n\n\nThe November 2019 release of Double Vision: Then & Now is a DVD/CD package that celebrates the 40th anniversary of the iconic album. It features a stunning reunion concert that brings together the current and original band members playing all the hits at the top of their game. 2020 kicked off with a three-day run at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra in mid January. Another highlight was a sold out January/February residency at The Venetian\, Las Vegas. The Covid-19 nightmare forced the band to postponealmost a hundred shows all over the world including a sold out show with Whitesnake at the 18\,000 seat London 02 Arena. \n\n\n\nThe Covid impact on the live concert business continued through much of 2021\, although by careful observation of health protocols\, Foreigner was able to execute a limited\, but highly successful touring schedule breaking box office records in many markets. Following spectacular shows at LA’s Greek Theater and the Santa Barbara Bowl\, the band embarked on a run of theater and major casino dates and other special events. These included appearances at Detroit’s Fox Theatre and the Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena in Atlantic City. Another highlight was an appearance at the Annual Gala of the American Turkish Society\, which celebrated the life of Mick Jones’ and Foreigner’s guiding light at Atlantic Records\, Ahmet Ertegun. The year culminated with FOREIGNER’S appearance at the spectacular Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. \n\n\n\n2022 commenced with a three-week residency at the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas and the rescheduled co-headline UK tour with Whitesnake\, and solo headline shows across Europe. The year continued with an exciting schedule of headline appearances that included the New York State Fair\, where Foreigner’s 38\,888 plus audience broke the Classic Rock attendance record\, and a run of sold-out amphitheater shows with Kid Rock. In the fall\, Foreigner returned to international touring with sold out shows in France\, Holland\, Israel\, and South Africa. \n\n\n\nFOREIGNER announced the beginning of their Farewell Tour on national television on November 14th. The tour will commence on July 6th\, 2023 in Alpharetta\, GA and we expect that it will take two years or so to complete. The goal is to get to all the cities that the band has played since its reformation in 2004.

SUMMARY:Rigoletto
DESCRIPTION:Rigoletto by Giuseppi Verdi (1813-1851) is a dramatic masterpiece\, showing Verdi’s genius in producing characters whose inner conflicts weave complex webs of dramatic tension. Rigoletto is both the evil jester and a loving father. Gilda\, the naïve ingenue is capable of forgiveness and sacrificial love. The Duke of Mantua can appear as both callow youth and heartless libertine. Verdi sets the stage in Mantua where the licentious court of the Duke’s privileged debauchery is on display. The Duke boasts of his conquests of women and Rigoletto suggests he imprison Count Ceprano and seduce his wife. Furious\, Ceprano plots to abduct a girl he suspects is Rigoletto’s mistress. Monterone forces his way in to denounce the Duke for the rape of his daughter. As he is led away\, Rigoletto cruelly mocks him and Moneterone pronounces a vengeful curse which horrifies the jester. \n\n\n\nAs Rigoletto broods on the curse\, he encounters Sparafucile\, a professional assassin\, who offers his services. Rigoletto rejects the offer but will recall it later. He reaches home and greets his daughter. They speak of her mother and Rigoletto tells Gilda that she is all he has that is good in the world. He leaves her in charge of her nurse. We find that the Duke has been courting Gilda while disguised as a student\, Gulatier Malde’\, and she has fallen in love with him. Now he arrives but they are interrupted by the courtiers who have come to steal her away. They encounter Rigoletto and slyly enlist his aid to abduct Count Ceprano’s wife from across the street. Rigoletto joins in the joke but when the mask they give him obscures his vision\, he is turned around and the cruel joke is on him as he helps them to kidnap his daughter\, Gilda. When they leave him alone he discovers the awful truth. \n\n\n\nThe Duke paces\, fearful that Gilda has been taken away but when he learns that she has been brought to him\, he rushes to her. When Rigoletto appears looking for her\, the courtiers bar his way\, astonished to learn that Gilda is his daughter. He lashes out at them in fury and then collapses into pleading. Gilda is released\, disheveled and shamed. Rigoletto orders the courtiers away. Moneterone passes by on his way to his execution\, providing the ironic backdrop for Rigoletto’s oath of vengeance. Gilda\, in spite of her ill treatment and in love with the Duke\, begs for his life. \n\n\n\nFather and daughter huddle outside of a small\, lonely inn where Sparafucile and his sister\, Maddalena\, entertain the Duke. Rigoletto tells Gilda to disguise herself as a boy and meet him in Verona. When she is gone\, he hires Sparafucile to kill the Duke. As a storm breaks\, Gilda returns and overhears Maddelena pleading with her brother to spare the Duke but his “professional ethics” will not allow him to break his contract. At length he agrees that someone has to die – the Duke or the next person who knocks on the door that night. At the height of the storm\, Gilda enters the inn and sacrifices herself to save the Duke. Shortly\, Rigoletto returns to collect a sack containing the body. He gloats over the death of his former patron but is stopped short when he hears the voice of the Duke in the inn. He frantically opens the sack to find Gilda. As the remembrance of Monterone’s curse crashes in on him\, Rigoletto realizes that vengeance has consumed the avenger. Gilda dies in his arms. The curse has been fulfilled.
