SUMMARY:One Year Anniversary Block Party
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Avenue Cultural Center (HACC) will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a Block Party on October 5th. This event will feature pop-up programs highlighting art\, local histories\, and a new initiative to support entrepreneurship and culture building within the community. \n\n\n\nThe Block Party will showcase local BIPOC-owned businesses and focus on sustainable entrepreneurship\, its connection to the arts\, and its role in revitalizing neighborhoods. Attendees can enjoy DJs\, food trucks\, an art activity\, and a BIPOC Maker’s Market. Local BIPOC makers\, chefs\, and business owners can apply for tent space\, with priority given to homegrown entrepreneurs and creative placemaking. \n\n\n\nThe event\, opening at 11 a.m. after the Gulf Coast Challenge Parade hosted by Bishop State on MLK\, will kick off with a fire speaker series featuring community advocates. This will be followed by a panel discussion on “The Future of the Avenue” with representatives from City Council\, 3 Mile Creek\, Bishop State\, and The Elk Lodge. Performances will include a movement piece by Zoe Banell & Dunbar Dance Team\, spoken word by Huggybear Da Poet\, HBO Def Poet Red Storm\, Chrystal Jones\, and Rachie Mack. The event will conclude at 3 p.m. with a Second Line led by the Calloway-Smith Marching Band.

DESCRIPTION:The Alabama Contemporary Art Center (ACAC) is departing from 301 Conti Street with the biggest art party of the year. As the building undergoes construction\, the ACAC is taking its events on the road in 2025. \n\n\n\nOngoing memberships are the most effective way for individuals and businesses to support the ACAC’s mission. However\, instead of hosting a typical membership drive\, the ACAC is throwing the Wild Things Ball\, a biennial celebration filled with food\, specialty cocktails by Cathead Distillery\, costumes\, music\, and art. This pre-Halloween event is all about embracing creativity and having fun. \n\n\n\nThe evening will be hosted by proto-feminist icon\, animal rights activist\, and performance artist Sir William Masters\, along with a special co-host revealed only to attendees. Throughout the night\, short-fire dance and costume competitions will be judged by celebrity guests\, including Courtney Matthews\, Chocolat\, and MMofA Director Jon Carfagno. Performances will be given by Kalypso Elegantz & Chaii Summers\, Pixie Van Dyke\, Braxton Hicks\, Peaches a la Mode\, Kitty Valentina\, Keke Zorra\, Mena Gerie\, and Gingee Grenade\, with DJ sets by VJ Tay\, Kandon Kyser\, and DJ Bob. \n\n\n\nThe event is for guests 21 and older. Tickets are $25\, and attendees must have a valid ACAC membership through October 19 to purchase. Tickets will increase to $75 at the door\, excluding membership. Pre-purchase is encouraged.
